Birds on a Wire is another quirky video slot from Thunderkick Games. As with many video slots, the playing area is a grid of 3×5 symbols, though here they are set out as birds resting on electricity pylon wires, rather than as symbols in a rolling set of reels. As always in a Thunderkick slot, the number of paylines is an odd number, in this case, 17.
As with other Thunderkick slots, Birds on a Wire has smooth graphics and animations, and it can be somewhat hypnotic to watch the new set of birds fly in with each ‘spin’.
Similarly to Esquelito Explosivo, when a set of birds complete a winning combination, they are removed from the playing area (sadly via a bolt of electricity which causes them to pop), and some new birds fly in.
For each continuing winning combination received within a single spin the multiplier (located to the left of the screen) increases to the next level, up to a maximum of x5. In the bonus game, this multiplier goes up to a maximum x20.
The game has a theoretical return to player of 97.2%.
Bonus Game/Free Spins
A bird in a box (there’s a reason he’s in a box – see below*) acts as the trigger for the bonus game. 3 or more of these appearing in the play area will award you with 10 free spins. Any additional bonus symbols will grant an extra 2 spins each, up to a maximum of 34 spins.
Once all the free spins have been used up, the game will award you infinite additional free spins until a winning combination is received. You’ll then be returned to the regular game.
Well. As we’ve said earlier in this review, there’s something hypnotic about watching those birds swoop in on each spin. I could literally (and have) sit and watch them for ages! The big wins come in when you get a good chain of winning combinations cascading from one spin, but especially so in the free spins game as the multipliers there are much larger (you start on x4 and can go up to x20)
* There are cats hiding in the boxes. (Don’t worry, they never actually manage to eat any of the birds – at least not during our review play!)
