UK Announces Advertising Ban for Unapproved Gambling Sites2007-08-26
Government officials in the U.K. have announced new regulations aimed at removing advertising rights for gambling sites not based in a “white-list” country – effectively any country outside the European Economic area, according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
The new regulations would take place on September 1st and are expected to affect over a thousand sites, who would be banned from advertising in the U.K. This announcement takes place only 5 months after authorities made it legal for gambling sites to advertise on the radio and television.
While sanctioned countries such as Alderney and the Isle of Man qualify for the “white list”, gambling hot spots such as Costa Rica and Belize do not.
“Protection is my number one priority,” according to James Purnell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, “I make no apology for banning adverts for websites operating from places that dont meet our strict standards” « Back To News Index
