Whats the French for Apres le Deluge
And so it is. After a wonderful tournament full of great games, huge shocks and terrific open football, we are left with a fairly uninspiring final. Perhaps you can have too much of a good thing.
At least we aren’t expecting too much. Previous finals have promised excitement with two juggernauts going head-to-head, only for tedium to flourish, punctuated by a solitary goal. France to be fair, usually give a good final – their previous two remarkable for the antics of Zinedine Zidane – but he cant be relied up on to brighten up this one.
Croatia have taken the ‘Germany 2002’ route to the final, although they did at least emerge with an 100% record from the Group of Death, and accounted for the hosts. They could also make history – no side has won three shoot-outs in a single tournament, and wouldn’t that be exciting!!
We suspect it won’t get that far. Croatia are yet to be really tested, and even when they faced moderate sides such as Denmark or England, really struggled through. They have also played the equivalent of a whole extra match compared to the French, who by contrast, have probably had the toughest route to a final since their 2006 version took care of Spain, Brazil and Portugal en route to Berlin.
There isn’t a particular bet we love, but with France so strong in midfield (where Croatia’s main threats lie), we like them to win to nil at 13/8 with Paddy Power.
