4 to Watch
1st Round Leader – Aaron Rai
Rai performed solidly at Walton Heath in qualifying, taking medallist honours at -14. All this without a caddie, and having never seen the course. He hits pretty straight too, so why not have a patriotic punt that doesn’t involve Justin Rose. Betfair will give you 200/1 on Aaron Rai being the leader through 18.
E/W Punt – Thomas Pieters
Following a brilliant masters on debut (=4 including six birdies in his final round), the lanky Pieters will be amongst the shrewdies’ dark horses to make an impact in 2017’s second major. Erin Hills favours those who can whack it, and the Belgian proved in the Ryder Cup that he is the man for the big occasion. Betfair will give you 40/1, which should be eaten up each way.
Top 40 Finish – Graeme McDowell
The former champion is always solid at the US Open, and although he will easily be out-driven and thus won’t contend at the very top, Gmac has made the top-30 in eight of his last ten starts and in seven of his last nine US Opens. Betfair will give you 2/1 on a top 40 finish.
Winner – Rickie Fowler
Always windy, but with wider, bouncier fairways than are typical for this event, it is Erin Hills’ length at 7,700 yards that will define this contest. Rickie Fowler is a master in windy conditions, and finished second at Pinehurst no.2 in 2014, a pretty similar course to Erin. Maturing before our eyes, we think Fowler is a cool enough customer to finally nail a really big one. Back him with Betfair at 20/1.
