2 to Watch: Him vs Him
For the first time in this fixture’s lush history, the famous old name of Manchester United and the recently-famous name of Chelsea are obsolete. Because make no mistake people – this is all about van Gaal vs Mourinho, the master against the translator, the ego against the special one.
Given the soaring nature of both their careers, it is surprising that they have only met once before, the Champions League Final of 2010, when Jose’s Inter outclassed LVG’s Bayern – Lahm, Shweinsteiger, Robben, Müller and Klose to name but five. That Inter team by contrast, only had Wesley Sneijder and possibly an already fading Samuel Eto’o who could genuinely be described as world class. Hell – Jose even sent on Sulley Muntari at one stage, as if to undermine the point.
On Sunday, the boot will be on the other foot – it is Mourinho who has the more settled side, and who will go into the match as favourites – 7/5 as opposed to United’s 9/5.
For all Van Gaal’s positive talk, United are yet to play well for more than the odd twenty minutes this season. Chelsea by contrast, haven’t even played badly for that period of time. It is for that reason that we can see nothing more than a big Chelsea win, and like the 3-0 available at 25/1 (get them with their fancy fractions) with our very good friends at Betfair. And don’t worry LVG – its only City up next.
