Super Sunday – 18th September 2011

This entry was posted on Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Having ticked the box marked ‘let the missus have the tv today’ by showing Norwich – West Brom and Fulham – Blackburn last Sunday, Ed Chamberlin and co are pulling out all the stops today. It is the first true Super Sunday of the season, as Spurs host Liverpool and last year’s Big Two, Chelsea and Manchester United, have a showdown at Old Trafford. It’s a real must-see, so make yourself comfortable, get the beers/crisps in, (or the tissues, if your name is Richard Keys or Andy Gray), and enjoy three hours of what Jamie Redknapp will no doubt describe, as “top, top football.”

Despite shadowing each other in the table for the last couple of years or so, Spurs and Liverpool fixtures haven’t ended all square in any of the last eight encounters. Spurs have won two of the last three meetings at the Lane in stoppage time, so perhaps a dramatic 3-2 Spurs is possible at 34 with Betfair.

At Old Trafford, it is Fergie’s Fledglings against AVB’s OAPs. All eyes as ever will be on Fernando Torres, who despite having a reputation for playing well against Vidic/Ferdinand, didn’t manage to score in any of his six matches against United last season. He needs better tomorrow.

In addition, Chelsea haven’t won at Old Trafford in the first half of a season for almost a decade (and that goal from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink). Their best bet for tomorrow may be a backs-to-the-wall 0-0. Back ‘no goalscorer’ at Ladbrokes at 12/1.
