Royal Ascot 2013

Horse Racing fans turn their attention to Berkshire this week as the Royal meeting takes place over five days, with the Gold Cup on Thursday being the highlight. With seven Group One races there’s plenty of quality on show and hopefully our tips will help you gallop towards some profit.

Our best bet of the first day, comes in the Coventry Stakes at 4.25pm. It could be the story many will want to see if Frankie Dettori can complete his rehabilitation on board Thunder Strike and we think he will. Thunder Strike has won on his last three starts and having handled the unique Epsom track so well, we expect him to go better on this more conventional course. At 11/1 with ¼ the odds for the first three with Bet365 it’s a great price.

Wednesday’s big race is the Prince of Wales’s stakes and we like the look of the favourite Al Kazeem who you can back at 2/1 with Ladbrokes. Having upset Camelot at the Curragh he’ll have many backers this week at Ascot as it looks like the peak of his career is arriving having got over a stress fracture to his pelvis. The main challenger, Camelot, hasn’t been in the sort of form that could tempt us at a general 11/4 so we’re happy with the price on Al Kazeem.

Thursday’s Gold Cup will attract a lot of attention and be careful to make sure if you’re an each-way punter that you’re betting with a firm who will give you ¼ the odds for the first three – some are only giving a fifth of the odds. Our selection is to go with the second favourite – Rite of Passage at 8.2 on Betfair. The horse hasn’t seen much action of late, but with two victories from the last three outings, we think the 2010 winner can be victorious once more. An absence from the track has not stopped him winning races in the past and he’s well worthy of being second favourite.
