Once more it looks like being all about the Heat – the overwhelming favourites to win a third title in a row. Despite losing Mike Miller, all the other cogs in the machine are whirring. Few would bet against LeBron James picking up yet another MVP award, whilst Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are only getting better Add in the seven ft Gred Oden who if he stays fit, should boost their iffy rebound rate. Back them to win at 3.25, primarily because they will.
Their main rivals according to the betting will be the Chicago Bulls, who have guard Derrick Rose back after missing the whole of last-season. The Indiana Pacers ran the Heat close last season, and Paul George, Roy Hibbert, Danny Granger and co will be up there again, along with new acquisition Luis Scola.
If you’re looking for an outside bet for the play-offs, consider the Cleveland Cavaliers. Kyrie Irving is different class whilst Andrew Bynum comes in to bolster the defence. Also, don’t rule out the Washington Wizards or Detroit Pistons, coached by Maurice Cheeks this time around. Guard Chauncey Billups is another new name, albeit a returning and amusing one.
Elsewhere, New York Knicks will be a soap opera again, whilst the wonderfully named Mike Budenholzer will be launching transition at the Atlanta Hawks. Similar instability reigns at the Boston Celtics, who have lost their coach to the Clippers, as well as their entire team apart from Rajon Rondo.
