Glorious Goodwood 2013

This entry was posted on Tuesday, July 30th, 2013

Glamorous and as the name says, ‘glorious’ it’s time for the horse racing aficionados to descend on Goodwood for five days of racing in West Sussex. One of the highlights of the flat racing calendar it features two Group One races, the Sussex Stakes and the Nassau Stakes which will definitely be the main attractions.

First up, the one-mile Sussex Stakes looks set to be a straight battle between Dawn Approach (6/5 at Bet365) and Toronado (6/4 with Ladbrokes). Open to horses up to five years old, we’ll have a new winner this year after Frankel was victorious in the last two.

Dawn Approach leads the head to head 2-0 against Toronado, but was only the victor by a short head in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. It was there that the Richard Hughes on board Toronado, felt hard done by, claiming he was driven sideways at the most crucial part of the race. Having watched it again, we agree and in what is an even contest, we’ll take the value bet on Toronado.

The Nassau Stakes is a flat race open to thoroughbred fillies and mares aged three or above and is ridden over a mile and a quarter, taking place on the final day of the meeting.

The 3.85 favourite on Betfair is Sky Lantern who was the winner of the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket before an equally wonderful display in the Royal Ascot Coronation Stakes. It is the horse to beat, but we’ll suggest Hot Snap as our value pick. A poor ride last time out, coming 9th in the 1000 Guineas overshadows the two excellent first places in the two races prior to that. Take the 10.5 on Betfair and look for each way places once Ladbrokes release their prices.
