Anyone But Lewis
F1 has its critics. Environmentally unaware, a little vulgar, all a bit Clarkson perhaps (despite the absence of ladies on the grid this season). But credit where credit is due. When football teams play friendlies, they charge you for the privilege of watching. If a tennis player is working their way back to fitness, they will do it in a tournament, cashing the cheque for a straight sets defeat. But F1 has a strict period called testing, where in their own time, all tweaks and changes can be made before the season begins.
And so we start in Barcelona, where a fortnight has just finished, and now all that needs to be done is for a load of boffins to work out which tyre compound worked best. No need to dig up Stephen Hawking however to note that Mercedes will be the fastest yet again, and even more reliable this year. Ferrari and Red Bull may have made strides forward, but it is clear their strides will have been replicated or improved by the Champions.
So the only bet, if one cant bring oneself to back that loveable old Lewis Hamilton is to back his co-driver Valterri Bottas, available at a pleasing 10/1 with Ladbrokes. Having had a season to bed in following his surprise rise to take the seat, he should now be familiar with both the car, and the pressure of driving for Mercedes. And whilst in his first year, particularly replacing the Champion Nico Rosberg, he was very much the junior driver, he may get more parity in 2018.
Last season was respectable enough, and he did win the final race in Abu Dhabi. He will also have used the fortnight of testing to tweak the car as he would like, an opportunity he barely got last time out. Hamilton often starts slowly. He may regret it this year.
