Football League Preview

Thankfully, for the likes of Bolton and Blackburn fans, life does exist beyond the Premier League. In fact, it can even be fun if you come straight back to the promised land, but get it wrong and you can end up like Portsmouth, which, much like Russell Brand in a closing ceremony – nobody wants to see.

The top of the Championship is the pinnacle for the Football League and we think it’s where Leeds United, a 14/1 shot with Bet365 could find themselves at the end of the season. Neil Warnock has signed virtually a new team at Elland Road and his track record suggests that when he signs the players he wants, he’ll achieve great things at that level. With a Middle Eastern takeover expected to go through in the next few days snap up the value whilst you can. They are 9/2 with Blue Square to be promoted.

The League One favourites are the play-off losers from last season, Sheffield United, who can be backed at 11/2 with Ladbrokes. We however prefer the look of Bournemouth, who are12/1 at Blue Square. They’ve secured Frank Demouge from FC Utrecht to add to last seasons big signing Matt Tubbs and with Russian backer Maxim Denim seemingly pushing money into the club, don’t be surprised to see the Cherries on top come May.

Rotherham are the shortest priced side to win any title in the Football League, with a best priced 7/2 available at Blue Square for the League 2 title. We think it’s too short though, with such an open league we like the look of Southend – a huge 18/1 with Ladbrokes. Their manager Paul Sturrock has won promotion five times before, whilst he oversaw a side with the best away record and the second highest goal scoring side in the league last year. 2011/12 saw The Shrimpers finish just one point off automatic promotion before losing in the play-offs, but they can atone for that disappointment in 2012/13.
