AC Milan vs Barcelona, European Cup Final 1994.
Ahead of this week’s Champions League Quarter Final showdown between the two most iconic clubs in world football, Milan and Barca, we thought it would be great to look back at what many have described as the greatest club performance of all-time; Milan’s 4-0 shellacking of Cryuff’s Dream Team in the final of the 1994 European Cup.
Milan had serious absences going into the match – van Basten injured, Costacurta and Baresi suspended, whilst rules limiting foreign stars cost the likes of Brian Laudrup and Jean-Pierre Papin their place in the side. Yet their makeshift back four, marshalled by Paulo Maldini, easily dealt with the Barca strikeforce of Romario and Stoichkov, whereas Nadal, Koeman and Guardiola, simply couldn’t handle Donadoni, Boban, Savicevic and in particular, Daniele Massaro.
Desailly and Albertini had the games of their lives in midfield, and they laid the foundations for Donadoni and Savicevic to put on first-half goals for Massaro. Trailing 0-2 at the break, Barca would have hoped for an immediate response, but they ended up going 3 down on 47 minutes – Savicevic finishing beautifully after a mistake from Miguel Angel Nadal. Marcel Desailly put the icing on the cake with a 4th, and in the process confirmed his achievement of becoming the first man to win the trophy with different clubs in consecutive years. (Video footage of the match can be found here.)
One thing is for sure – the odds on a repeat scoreline on Wednesday night will be stratospheric. And whatever happened to the brilliant Milan boss that night – a certain F Capello?
