Venables and Clough Mark 2

Earlier in the year, José Mourinho and Antonio Conte indulged in a pretty brutal verbal slapfest that threatened to end hilariously in actual fisticuffs, before the dull old FA got involved and warned all parties off. There seems to have been a cooling of late however, in the war between the two managers who will be leading out their sides on Saturday. Yet don’t expect any holding hands à la Venables and Clough in ’91 – the easing of relations is probably due to both managers realising that in the shadow of City, their sparring was very much two bald men fighting over a comb.

Given the way Chelsea and United have played this season, an actual fight on the field between the gaffers would be more entertaining than watching the two sides loll around the pitch. Yet in the absence of giving the people what they want, punters will have to settle for a bet on the match itself.

Considering the brouhaha over the summer regarding the future destinations of both Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata, it is perhaps indicative of their seasons that both are doubts for Saturday, with no ill-effects expected to befall their clubs if they don’t make it. Also very firmly in the ‘not caring’ category of late have been the Chelsea players and possibly even their manager. Chuck in the fear of an injury before the World Cup, and it is hard to see any man in blue really putting in the effort that a sapping Wembley pitch on a hot day would require. The standard ‘Mourinho to nil’ victory then, available with our good friends Ladbrokes at 3/1.
