4 to Watch
Scotland vs Ireland:
With Germany, despite recent stutters, surely going to top the group, it is realistically one of Ireland, Scotland and Poland for the other automatic slot and one of the other two for the playoff berth. Scotland and Ireland have never both qualified for the same international tournament, but it could happen this time. Their two meetings will go a long way towards deciding which one makes it automatically however. Two Celtic legends go head-to-head at um, Parkhead, and we fancy a cagey 0-0 available at 7/1 with our good friends at bet365.
England vs Slovenia
Slovenia, after four straight defeats, suddenly came to life with impressive wins over Switzerland and in Lithuania. Srecko Katanec, who led Slovenia to qualify for the Euros in 2000 and the World Cup in 2002 took charge again in January last year, and he will be keen for history to repeat itself. England keep winning in this group, and should just have enough. We like a 2-1 available at 17/2 with bet365.
Austria vs Russia
It’s first against second in the group (one in which the presence of Sweden complicates automatic qualification), but it’s also a contest between an Austria team led by Bayern’s David Alaba who will be hoping for their first tournament qualification-by-right since France ’98, and a Russia team led by unpaid Fabio Capello, currently indulging his pro-bono side. Alaba is out but Austria have the momentum and should have too much for Russia. We like Austria -1.5 at 6.1 with bet365, and watch out for Postman Fabio delivering his own P45 some time soon.
Germany vs Gibraltar
Away win. Only joking…
