2 To Watch – Ronaldo & Pirlo.
Dear Mr Platini (or may I call you ‘Michelle’?)
Rather than tinker with the format by increasing the number of teams in the 2016 Euros to 24, why not try and increase the number of players to more than two? We are bored of Pirlo and Ronaldo.
Yep – never before can two men have grabbed a tournament by the scruff of the neck like the gorgeous Italian and the beautiful Portugeser. And whilst Pirlo has nabbed all the headlines following his performance against England on Sunday night, Ronaldo has been beavering away with slightly less acclaim (for once).
The £80m Real Madrid man is aiming to repeat the feat of Maradona in the 1986 Jules Rimet by single-handedly dragging an average team to glory. Indeed, after their opening day performance against the Germans, Paulo Bento’s men drifted to as long as 28/1 to win the competition.
The 12 shots Ronny had against Holland in the group game was the most a single player has ever had in a European Championship game. And like Dirty Diego, it is fair to say his goals are saved for when it really matters. Of his last 24 strikes for Portgual, just three have come in friendly matches.
We may witness Ronaldo whinging, waving imaginary yellow cards and going down easily on Thursday, but we’re also likely to witness brilliance. Perhaps even the sort of brilliance that makes Portugal a decent bet at 7/4 with Bet365 of reaching the final.
