England vs Switzerland 2011

One last shift before the holidays begin

Just when your girlfriend/wife thought football was over for three months, and it was time to finally get those shelves up. Alas here come Fabio, Psycho and all the other dwarves as Wembley hosts its third big game in eight days. It’s England vs Switzerland in European Championships 2012 qualifying, Group G Round 5.

Group leaders England have not lost any of their seven competitive fixtures at Wembley under Capello, and have notched 25 goals in these seven home qualifiers, across two tournaments. Anyone who has sat through Switzerland’s recent games in major tournaments will be well aware of their issues with goals – they have failed to score in six of their last ten outings. Having gone unbeaten for 12 months from October 2008, they’ve since won just three of their last sixteen games.

England simply must not lose. With tricky trips ahead in both Bulgaria and Montenegro, failure to pick up all three points at Wembley could leave the Three Lions in real danger of only securing a play-off spot against the likes of Croatia, Sweden, Russia or Portugal.

Defeat looks unlikely however. Swiss boss Ottmar Hitzfeld tends to set his teams up merely to sit back and defend, and England usually manage to break such sides down. For the patriots amongst you, a 3-0 victory available at 8/1 with Ladbrokes looks sound.

An England victory would be a major step towards Poland and Ukraine 2012 – so roll on the Swiss.
