Club World Cup Preview

We’ve all got some friends who have done a runner to the other side of the world to escape their problems back home, but one can’t help but feel Chelsea have taken it a bit far by taking the whole squad out to Japan.
Thankfully, one of FIFA or UEFA (after they’ve stopped bickering about who runs the Club World Cup) has decided to put on a tournament, which pits the European Champions against the club champions from the other five continental members of FIFA as well as the domestic champions of the Japanese hosts.
The good news for Chelsea is that the European Champions have rocked up to win the tournament in each of the last five years. In fact The Blues new boss, Rafa Benitez already has experience in this tournament, having won it two years ago. His short tenure at Inter Milan included a victory in the 2010 final over the mighty Mazembe who hail from the Democratic Republic of Congo. No, us neither.
This slightly odd, seven-teamed competition sees Chelsea and the Brazilian side Corinthians get a bye to the semi-finals and it’ll be a bit of a shock were it not those two sides contesting the final.
Corinthians have just finished sixth in their domestic season but ended it strongly, losing just three of the final 16 games. Chelsea meanwhile have looked a mess in recent weeks and we’ll trust the Samba boys to take the tournament off European hands. It’s a general 12/5 shout.
