The Championssssssss dum dum dum dum
So it is time to find out if last season was a minor blip or a sign of something more serious. Can what a local bylaw declares we must call the ‘English contingent’ produce a serious challenge in the Champions League, or will it be the Germans’ marching on once more? Or perhaps Neymar + Bale could guarantee a Barca-Real final in Lisbon. Dare we rule out the Italian giants? Or the nouveau riche French?
Well given two of the current top three in the Prem aren’t even competing in the European Cup this season, English hopes look slim. And when one factors David Moyes and Manuel Pellegrini’s large gap on their CV under the heading ‘Recent Champions League glory’, the situation certainly ain’t looking too rosy.
Which leads us to the capital duo – Arsenal and Chelsea, the biggest club never to win it and some might say, the smallest to ever do so *ahem*.
Arsenal at 25/1 is certainly the value. With Ozil and Cazorla pulling strings, they should have enough to break down the most miserly defence at the Emirates. And with Theo Walcott a constant menace in Europe (far more so than in the Prem where he has on the whole been worked out,) there should be crosses galore for Olivier Giroud on the break. Could this be the ultimate farewell for Wenger in what many expect to be his final year? Don’t bet against it.
An outside tip – Napoli at 40/1.
