Carnegie Challenge Cup Final Leeds vs Warrington

With Danny McGuire out the final, so went Leeds hopes. Well that is popular theory, which we here at Oggs have no truck with. It is of course a personal tragedy for McGuire who was one try away from becoming the first man to hit 200 in Super League. But the betting suggests it is an even bigger problem for Leeds, who have drfited out to 3.7 (from an initial price of 2.9) in the match betting. Yet we say get on it. McDermott showed last season in guiding the club to Grand Final victory that when it comes to the big occasion he has the ability to produce a game plan that works.

We know the Rhinos have a dreadful record in Challenge Cup finals. Since their 1999 win over London they’ve been to five and lost every single one of them. Most pundits think that whilst they might have been able to upset Wigan in the semi-final, they have precious little hope of creating a second upset. Yet if there is one club that have shown an ability to defy logic this season, (and at the end of last season too), then it is the Rhinos.

Their results have included some ridiculous calamities like the 50 point mauling at home to Wigan at the start of June, and at one time the coach’s future was even being questioned as they struggled along not even being certain of qualifying for the play-offs. But things have come together steadily, and running 68 points past Widnes a fortnight ago was a reminder of that.
