PDC World Darts Championships

There are many reasons for darts’ sky-threatening popularity, but perhaps one, is that it is the last place on earth where men can still behave as lads – get as drunk as they like, sing as loud as they like, and wolf-whistle at scantily-clad women as often as they like. In the PC-gone-mad world where even the heavyweight champion of the world can’t inform a fellow BBC SPOTY nominee that she would be better on her back, the Ally Pally in December acts as a refuge, a Womens Aid for men if you like. Of course, there may be other reasons. Having undergone years of Phil the Power dominance, the sport is beginning to work within a post-Taylor world. If... Continue reading...

PDC World Darts Championship 2014

Der der der der der, der der der der der, der der der der der – oy oy oy Aside from Taylor and MVG, can anyone else win this? Barney at 33/1 maybe? Stephen Butnting at 16s? Given the length of the format, the truth is the best players in the world tend to do the business. Over nine sets or more, the best players deliver. The man with the toughest draw is bipolar Ambassador James Wade. And even he will find it hard to get down if he gets past Bunting, Dolan, Lewis, Taylor and MVG. He’s a definite. Gary Anderson meanwhile has a more comfortable passage – on form with only the Snakebite in his quarter to fear.... Continue reading...

PDC World Darts Championship 2013

Der Der Der Der etc Never mind the baby Jesus quite frankly; for worshippers at the Ally Pally every December, Christmas is all about the darts. And for those whom the Alexandra Palace is their church, Phil Taylor is their deity – 16 times a World Champion, including last year’s epic comeback against Michael van Gerwen. Taylor starts as favourite of course (around just under evens with our friends at Betfair), with van Gerwen (4.9) and 2012 Champion Adrian Lewis (8.2) next in the betting. The Jackpot has been playing well since winning the European Championships in July but 2013 has undoubtedly been the year of MVG, with the Dutchman winning the Premier League and a dozen tour titles for... Darts Preview – 13 December 2012

Classic Match  2007 PDC Darts World Championship.  Thanks to clever branding from Ladbrokes, and clever wordplay from the late Sid Waddell, darts was already a well-established television entertainment by 2007. However, the 2007 World Championship Final between 13 times PDC Champion Phil Taylor, and 4x BDO lord Raymond van Berneveld lifted the arrows to the seraphic level of the great sporting showdowns. Taylor got off to a flyer, winning the first eight legs in rapid fashion. Barney only had a solitary dart at a double in this time, a missed bull for a 167 finish. Yet a 170 checkout in the fourth set turned the match and the players went stride for stride until the match tied at six sets... Continue reading...
