Only one winner here – or the weather
Well at least they are used to playing on a Thursday night. For reasons that are probably so complicated that they would make the late Graham Kelly spin in his grave, the missed match from the previous weekend’s fixtures, is a replica of a fixture that took place last weekend, and now is happening on a Thursday night in the snow.
And the truth is it couldn’t be worse timing for Arsenal. It would take a turnaround of extraordinary proportions to transform Sunday’s pusillanimous drubbing into a home win, and one suspects their only chance of avoiding defeat here would be the for the game to be called off due to bad weather (don’t rule that one out conspiracy theorists.) The defence has to tighten up almost overnight, whilst the midfield was bypassed so often on Sunday, it may as well have stayed at home. The return of Henrik Mikhatariyan will provide nothing except scrabble points.
It all seems to be going wrong for Arsene Wenger right now, with Pep Guardiola, the man many saw for many years as the natural replacement for the Frenchman had he left a while back, showing up this week, and coming soon, an all-action, fiery newbie in Gennaro ‘the General’ Gattusso, whose AC Milan side face Arsenal in the Europa League Round of 16, and who may provide another unfavourable comparison with the old man struggling to do up his zip.
Might Pep provide the ultimate insult and go with a shadow side ahead of a meeting with Chelsea on Sunday. Arsenal have just two wins in their last 16 against fellow ‘top 6ers’, and we feel 1.86 on an away win is huge value with Betfair.
