4 to Watch – Transfer Special

This entry was posted on Monday, July 2nd, 2012

For those of you mourning the passing of the 2012/13 football season, note that the Europa League qualifiers begin in a matter of hours. And even if that is not your thing, there should be a respectable amount of tittle-tattle in the tabloids to keep you erect. Who will issue a ‘come and get me plea’? Who will take a pay-rise and say they’re going to for a trophy rise (looking at you RVP.) And who will end up on the soccer scrapheap?

Here are your 4 to watch:

Robin Van Persie will inevitably be the most discussed transfer of the summer, and Arsenal only add to the tease by typically making a very late decision on whether to stick or twist. The signings of two forwards in Podolski and Giroud indicate RVP’s likely departure, but don’t forget the likes of Bendtner, Vela and Chamakh are all almost certain to depart. The Betfair market isn’t full of liquidity right now, but if you can get a price around 2.3 on him to stay, we would take it.

The other side of North London should arguably be more concerned. Last Summer Tottenham dug their heels in over their Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, but this year should be different. 1.2 on him leaving looks correct.

Whilst Spurs may lose one star midfielder, we think they’ll keep their Dutch star Rafael Van Der Vaart. To lose both him and Luka would have a huge impact on ticket sales, and with Modric able to bring in a bulky transfer fee, we think he’ll be the sole sacrifice. You can get 4/7 on Van Der Vaart staying and we think that is a great price.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez had a turbulent 2011/12 season but we don’t think anyone else is going to win the race to get his signature. Some bookies will give you 1/5 that he remains at Anfield and whilst it won’t make you rich, it should make you some cash at least.
