The Hippo and The Dwarf an Od not an Oggs Story

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Od Story not an Oggs story – It would seem to be true, but made us laugh so much.

Bangkok. A hippopotamus swallowed a circus dwarf in a ‘freak accident’ in northern Thailand, according to a columnist in the Pattaya Mail.

The Grapevine column reported, “A circus dwarf, nicknamed Od, died recently when he bounced sideways from a trampoline and was swallowed by a yawning hippo waiting to appear in the next act.”

“Vets said Hilda the Hippo had a gag reflex which caused her to swallow. More than 1000 spectators continued to applaud wildly until they realised there had been a tragic mistake.”

Bet A Nissan Micra Racing To Mongolia For Charity Makes It

Monday, July 20th, 2009

1,000 teams started racing to Mongolia this weekend and our interest lies with two mad Englishmen who are attempting the 10,000 miles in a beaten up Nissan Micra. The rules are simple, you need a vehicle of 1 litre or less and you have to end up in Mongolia, everything else is left up to the insane teams. For all the latest news follow the pair at http://www.mongolrally09.theadventurists.com/teammadlady

Simon Todd and Tom Henry are our two plucky individuals we will be following over the next few weeks. We bet they’ll make it, and we’ll update the blog here and our Twitter Oggs feed as news comes in from wherever their map reading skills take them.

In the Mongol Rally there is no set course – you choose whatever path you like. They have chosen the southern route, London to Ulaanbaatar, undoubtedly the tougher route; braving the extreme heat of the Kazakh desert, skirting Afghanistan/Iraq and straight across Iran. Initial plans show that they are going to be travelling through fourteen (or more) countries!

One of the main reasons of the Mongolia Rally is to raise huge amounts for excellent charities in order to spread prosperity to areas of the world less fortunate than ourselves. In 2009 there are three overall Official Charities and all the funds raised by the teams supporting them will be directed to projects therein. The main charity is Mercy Corps, who are helping to assist nomadic people to the challenges of modern day life by supporting rural communities and herding families, through a range of projects that help them live an independent and sustainable life. The other two charities are children’s charities, CYPPD (Children and Young Peoples Protection Development) and CNCF (Christina Noble Childrens Foundation), who run a variety of projects in that change the lives of kids who have often been given a pretty rough hand in life.

Pro Golfers Who Twitter

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Resplendent Turnberry, host of this year’s British Open, was twittering loudly this morning and it wasn’t the birdies either. Pro golfers who Twitter are massively on the increase both here in the British Open and across the pond in the US.

Ian Poulter, John Daly and Paul Casey were all twiddling their text thumbs whilst waiting to tee off on the Scottish Ayrshire course. And the fans were twittering back in their hundreds, which by the weekend could turn into the thousands.

Sporting occassions produce huge amounts of lively banter on Twitter, the 140 character micro-blogging site, but now sports stars are not just keeping fans up to date on their days off, but also at the game. Infact the Women’s US PGA even asked if their women players would twitter between holes. A marketing ploy no doubt, and not one that has caught on, but who knows in the future, eh?

Anyway, Oggs has been sleuthing around and found that even more female pro golfers twitter than their male counterparts, but then perhaps that’s only natural. So here is a list we shall update on a regular basis and allows you to follow and befriend top golf stars from around the world. Just don’t tweet them while they are putting for the championship okay! More from the Open at http://www.opengolf.com and their Twitter feed http://Twitter.com/opengolf2009

The Ashes, it’s Aussie v’s Pom, Bet it’s a Belter!

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Four years ago I was at the Oval cricket ground on the last day of the 2005 Ashes to watch England crowned champions after a thrilling test series versus the Australians.

After losing the little urn of bail ashes back to the Aussies in a disastrous 5-0 whitewash in 2007 down-under, it’s game on this summer back in the UK and after the first clash it’s honors even with a draw. The English side were lucky to hold on, but then the Australians are kicking themselves for not being able to get the final remaining wicket in their remaining 11 overs.

So now we move to the home of cricket, the MCC and not always the best ground for the British team, the hallowed turf of Lords Cricket Ground, in Marylebone, London.

My heart wants England, but the bookies have the Aussies as favourites. And now with injury to Flintoff reported today and a week bowling performance in Cardiff the omens don’t look good. Follow our take on the game on http://Twitter.com/Oggs this coming week.

Looks like another terrific contest this summer looms, who will be the heros and villains this time around? England need Flintoff and Pietersen, possibly Harmison or Strauss to be on form, and although the Aussies are without the wiley Shane Warn, Ricky Ponting is again on top of his game with the bat and they have yet to unleash fast bowler Brett Lee after he tore a rib muscle in the lead up to the first Test.
