Obama versus McCain on Gambling

Friday, October 24th, 2008

So Obama is a low stakes Poker player and McCain a casino high stakes Craps player. Interesting analogy of the two leading runners for the future Presidency of the United States on how they gamble and therefore how they’d handle the most powerful job in the world.

Tough Tory Proposals For UK Gambling Act

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Shadow Gambling Minister Tobias Ellwood said a Tory government would reverse some of the most dangerous parts of the UK Gambling Act 2005. “Gaming must be seen as a form of entertainment where you’re likely to lose money, rather than win,” he said.

One proposal includes a ban on internet players using credit cards just like the US UIGEA bill of 2006. Another is to look at the rules on advertising for online casinos, bookmakers and betting machines and make it stricter, but no mention was made about the National Lottery, which always seems to be passed over. Foreign online firms would need to prove that they could self-regulate themselves in order to operate sites in the UK.

Gamcare says gambling addiction has increased in the past year with the average debt soaring and this has prompted the political parties to provide a quick reaction all wanting to claim they would do something about it.

The relaxation of the TV advertising laws for gambling companies in the UK opened up a new and more powerful medium for poker, bookmaker and bingo companies to advertise there products and probably the main cause, together with the US ban in 2006 making these companies shift their focus from the lucrative US market and concentrate recruiting new players in the UK and EU.

Interestingly within bingo halls and arcades the Tories said they’d like to see the introduction of more category 3 slot machines with a payout of £1 and a maximum prize of £500, but the stake raised to £2 and possibly increasing the maximum payout further. Mr Ellwood claimed this would encourage customers to play slot machines rather than turn to more addictive fixed-odds terminals.

House Lotto or Notto

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

People who bought raffle tickets to win a house in Devon have been told the prize draw, due to have taken place today, has been postponed.

Brian and Wendy Wilshaw sold 46,000 tickets costing £25 each for the chance to win the £1m Oldborough Mansion estate near Crediton, but a message posted on their website informed entrants the draw had been halted by the Gambling Commission. The commission said it could not comment on individual cases. A spokesman for the Wilshaws said they were “distraught” at having to postpone the draw. He said they were in discussions with the Gambling Commission to resolve the issue “as soon as possible”. And went on to say: “I can say with absolute certainty that if the Gambling Commission decides that the draw can’t go ahead then everyone will get their money back.”

A competition entrant from London, who asked not to be named, said: “I woke up this morning expecting one of two things to happen, to either win a house or be happy someone else had won a house. I was not expecting be told it was postponed.” She said she had been checking the competition website every day and was annoyed that the Wilshaws had waited until Wednesday night to announce the postponement.

The 11-acre Oldborough Mansion estate at Morchard Bishop includes a house, fishing lake and holiday cottages. It was valued at £1m before the competition started.

The Gambling Commission recently warned homeowners who were considering selling houses in this way that they could fall foul of the 2005 Gambling Act. Tom Kavanagh, deputy chief-executive, said: “Lotteries are the preserve of good causes and cannot be operated for private gain.”

“Prize competitions are free of statutory control under the Gambling Act and can be run for profit. But homeowners considering such schemes as an alternative to selling their house risk committing a criminal offence if they cross the boundary and stray into offering an illegal lottery.”

The Wilshaws claim they contacted the Gambling Commission twice before launching their lottery to make sure it would not breach any rules. The couple originally said they decided to raffle the estate to beat the slowdown in the housing market.

Google UK Lifts Gambling Advertising Ad Ban

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Google will lift its ban on paid search advertising for gambling websites in the UK from 17th October, 2008 and no doubt net itself millons of pounds of advertising revenue.

UK companies registered with the Gambling Commission will be allowed to target Adword text-based ads to users searching for gambling-related terms in England, Scotland and Wales, although not in Northern Ireland. Google refused to carry search ads for gambling companies and associated operations after the introduction of the Port Authority Bill and  UIGEA in the US and it became a worldwide stand by the company until now.

No doubt many companies starved of advertising on the world’s largest search engine will start a new keywords bidding war, with companies seizing the opportunity to tap into a potentially lucrative new sales vertical.

Gambling.com was the stand alone PPC search engine when Google dropped Gambling ad revenues and mysteriously disappeared from the major Google rankings this past year, but the news of the ad-ban lift will allow it to buy it’s first page listing once more.

Google will continue to prohibit gambling-related advertising on its properties outside the UK, although non-UK advertisers based within the European economic area wishing to target Great Britain will be allowed, provided they are licensed to advertise gambling in their respective countries.

The ads will automatically be classified as non-family safe, meaning they will not show when a user has applied the safe search option.

Oggs.com, the online casino review website, will monitor the bidding war and report back in the weeks ahead.

The thrill of the chase… not for me it isn’t!

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

In the heat of the summer, some dogs chase their tails. They rarely catch them. In summer and in winter, spring and autumn, some men chase women. They rarely catch them.

In all seasons, I chase my losses. I rarely staunch them.

There, I’ve said it. I’ve admitted it. It’s a problem I’ve  had all my punting life and I am no nearer to a solution now than I was when placed  my first bet all those years ago.

Maybe admitting the problem will be a step on the road to salvation, a bit like a therapy session, although I doubt it.

I can’t seem to be able to stop myself.

I bet quite conservatively, often betting on the place markets on the exchanges where I think you can find some terrific value.

I like to go for horses with good, progressive form in two-year-old or three-year-old and upwards maidens, usually picking my selections from those in the first two in the betting.

With such an approach you don’t back too many losers nor will you be paying a visit to the nearest Ferrari showroom to book a test drive.

In fact, it’s not unusual, as Tom Jones once sang, to have sequences running into double figures in terms of successful punting days.

However, when that loss does come, as it eventually does, I seem to lose all sense of logic, often punting away all those days’ profits in a single afternoon, which may often stretch into the evening action on At The Races, sometimes betting on American horses I have never heard of, ridden by jockeys I have never heard of, racing on tracks I have never heard of.

I don’t think there is any easy answer as to why I go from being one of the most careful punters on the planet to one of the stupidest often within the space of a few hours, but if there is a ‘cure’ out there I’d like to hear about it.

I’ve tried the Betfair forum without any success, now it’s time for Oggs.com bloggers to give me their views.

Guys, I need help and quickly!

Biggest casino theft in United States history

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

In September,  11 members of a gang were indicted by the federal grand jury in San Diego for an alleged conspiracy to cheat 12 casinos across the country. The defendants were known as the ‘Tran Organization’ and operated between 2002 and 2007.

According to reports they were said to be allegedly using a ‘false shuffling’ cheating scheme at blackjack and mini-baccarat games in various casinos. They were said to have bribed card dealers and supervisors to perform false shuffles, creating ’slugs’ of unshuffled cards.

The indictment also alleges that members of the organization used sophisticated mechanisms for tracking the order of cards during games, including hidden transmitter devices and specially created software that would predict the order in which cards would reappear during baccarat and blackjack games.

If convicted on the conspiracy charge, defendants face a maximum five year prison sentence.

An indictment is merely an allegation.  Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Yanks! Cherry Red

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

A more lighthearted piece this. Oggs has been testing out the new Cherry Red Casino online this week, sister site to Rushmore Casino and loving its slick, polished styling, and the Americans are going to love it too as its available to them and even better it’s an RTG award winning software offering.

In order to tie in high class casino, US and cherry red we had thought about a video of the Bee Gee’s Cherry Red or even ZZ Top’s Cherry Red, but we liked this better.
