2 To Watch – Royal Ascot 2011

Racing for the posh.

Princess Beatrice’s last public appearance led to most folk assuming she’d confused the Royal Wedding with Ladies Day at Ascot. So if the ginger lass turns up on Thursday holding a wedding invite, we’ll all know why. For fans of open goal jokes, if Camilla turns up on Thursday, it will be to run in the 14.30 Group 2 Norfolk Stakes.

  1. The pick of Wednesday’s action is the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes. Priced at a seemingly undesirable 1.45 with Betfair, a bet on So You Think represents a ‘free money’ bet, and is one of several short-priced dead-certs at Ascot this week. Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has claimed that the horse is “unbelievable” and having won both races he’s participated in since arriving in Ireland from his native New Zealand, it may now be time to believe.
  2. The highlight of Ladies Day (Thursday) is unquestionably the Gold Cup. The 2009 Irish Derby Winner, Fame and Glory is the horse to beat, but the unconvincing and somewhat labouring manner of his victory at Leopardstown last month makes us think that there is value elsewhere. We fancy the second favourite Duncan (6/1 with BlueSquare) who was extremely impressive at York when storming to victory there four weeks ago.

So sit back, relax and enjoy one of the great weeks of racing. If you’re going down to Ascot, enjoy. Just make sure you’re not stuck in the seat behind Beatrice.
