Springtime for Sports
March is kicking off this year’s sporting calendar, and whilst that’s not to say there’s not been any since last summer, this month sees the beginning of a busy schedule through to summer 2011.
First off, this month sees the bulk of the Cricket World cup being played out across three countries – India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The tournament sees some names that you don’t normally associate with cricket (like the Netherlands and Ireland), and has a similar structure to the (ahem, proper) World Cup with both knockout and group stages, leading into the final matches.
There haven’t been any major upsets yet – all 6 major cricketing nations are leading their groups, leaving all the excitement to come in the latter stages of the tournament.
Halfway through March, sees the Cheltenham Festival – one of the great horseracing meetings in the calendar, which this year is sure to be extra special as it is the 100th anniversary of the Festival! The 4 days are some of the best jump racing including the Gold Cup, won last year by neither of the favourites – Imperial Commander (there’s a lesson in there somewhere!)
Finally, Formula 1 is also set to kick off at the end of the month with the Melbourne Grand Prix and the annual frenzy that surrounds the sport has already begun to escalate – even the BBC has a F1 gossip page!
